Founding member of Beyond the Beach - attended the first Dominican Fiesta on July 24, 2004 in Blenheim, Ontario. All of our travels to date have been to the Puerto Plata area. My husband & I have visited Mustard Seed Home (outside Puerto Plata), Dream Project (Cabarete) and met with several people involved with Sosua Kids. October 22, 2010 will be our first trip to Punta Cana. We have a Dominican Goddaughter, Emelina, who was born September 9, 2005 - we picked her name at the request of her parents. She has an older sister, Maria Celeste. We attended Emelinas christening on December 7, 2005 in the small town of Maimon. The family lives in Los Canos de Maimon which we have visited often.
I am an Ontario native who has lived in Ottawa since 1993. My first trip to the Dominican Republic was to Puerto Plata in 1999. On that trip, I met one of the vendors who has become someone who we ensure to meet up with when we are back in Puerto Plata. He brought us to his house and introduced us to his family. Since that time we have travelled to Samana as well as Punta Cana. I have been a member of Debbies Dominican Travel forum for several years, which led me to attending my first Fiesta in Chelsea, QC. The 2012 Fiesta will be my 4th.
Involved with the Punta Cana area since 02 and fell in love with the Country and the People of the Dominican Republic. Also involved with many community programs and local sports. Sales Manager with Lindt & Sprungli (USA) and cover Philadelphia, Central & Southern NJ, NY State, and Southern USA Markets for distribution and sales. Good thing I love to travel as I am on the road almost weekly! Married to my Best Friend Joe and we have 4 kids from 13 to 25.
Annette and I first visited the Dom Rep in February 2002, a 9 hour flight from the UK, and fell in love with the place and the people. We took a bag of gifts (pencils etc.) and thought we were doing well but soon realised how much need there was. On our trip in 2004 we linked up with Dream Project and the year after with Mustard Seed. Our Church, our local school and our friends continue to enable us to help through Beyond the Beach.
Have spent many years in the retail business with a number of Canada major retailers both here in Canada and the United States. Presently own a building Contracting Company based in Whitby, Ontario. My wife(Sharon) and I are so proud of our three amazing children, Jeff, Angela & Ryan. It was Sharon and Angela who introduced me to the Dominican Republic many years ago after they had travelled there together on a number of occasions. I was so taken back by the beauty of the country and the sincerity and warmth of its people that we consistently returned, firstly with our immediate family and now with friends and family.
When asked to become a Fiesta Committee Member in 2009 I realized not only are there many others who feel the same as we do about the citizens of the Dominican Republic, but it presented a sincere and respectful manner in which we could help those beautiful open minded and talented children to realize their dreams as well. We are proud to be involved with the Beyond The Beach Childrens Foundation to assist with fulfilling the dreams envisioned by ourselves and those of our founding members. I always look forward to my visits to the Dominican Republic and enjoy meeting the people who make the island so special.
Hola! I am a Canadian gal, born & raised in the province of Ontario. We moved around a little due to my husband’s profession, but I now reside in Belleville Ontario, home of the beautiful Bay of Quinte. My first trip to the Dominican Republic was February 2003 when my husband & I stayed at the Bahia Principe Rio San Juan. We have made 14 trips to the D.R., our last trip being November 2013…a year before my husband passed away with cancer. We fell in love with the Dominican Republic …its beauty, its diversity & most of all, its people. What a hard working group of people for the so little that they get paid. But they are a happy people & are very proud of their country.
Most of our vacations were done on the North Coast /Puerto Plata area, but we did venture down to the East Coast/Punta Cana/Bavaro side & did a trip to Samana. I too, got involved with Beyond The Beach through Debbie’s Dominican Travel Forum by asking questions & getting to know the people involved. By the time I was able to attend my first BTBCF Dominican Fiesta in 2008, I already knew quite a few people and what the Foundation was all about. I was asked to come on board as a Committee Member in 2010 & I was honoured when asked to take on the Treasurers’ position in January 2014 …so glad to be able to give back to the people of the D.R. & help especially “in equipping the children of the Dominican Republic with the tools necessary for learning and living, dreaming and achieving."
